    Lab Assistant

    Join our team as a Lab Assistant, where you will play a crucial role in patient registration and specimen processing. This position involves ensuring the integrity of laboratory specimens and providing essential support to clinicians for accurate patient assessment.

    Job Description

    • Register and interview patients, obtaining accurate demographic and financial information while checking for medical necessity for all Medicare patients.
    • Perform computer entry and prepare registration paperwork.
    • Send out specimens according to section procedures and policies, ensuring the appropriateness of the sample.
    • Competently handle and process all laboratory specimens, adhering to laboratory procedures for receipt, data entry, storage, and delivery of specimens to testing areas.
    • Serve as a resource for specimen and testing information.
    • Obtain blood samples from the correct patients, ensuring proper drawing and labeling following established procedures.
    • Confirm unusual results with reference laboratories and review and report all results according to laboratory policy.

    Requirements

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • ASCP or equivalent certification as a phlebotomy technician preferred.
    • Must meet CLIA '88 requirements for performing moderate complexity testing as defined in the Federal Register, Vol. 57, No 40, Subpart 493.1423.
    • Valid New Mexico driver's license.
    • Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally in English.
    • Laboratory equipment operation skills required.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology.
    • Minimum of two years as a Lab Assistant, including experience with central processing.

    Environment

    • Routine exposure to bloodborne pathogens and potentially infectious materials.
    • May be required to wear gloves, laboratory coat, facemask, and goggles.
    • Exposed to carcinogenic, hazardous, and flammable chemicals, biohazardous and radioactive materials, sharp needles and blades, infectious specimens, toxic fumes, and mental stress.

    Physical Requirements

    • May be required to work more than a standard shift as dictated by workload, staffing, and equipment failure.
    • 90% standing, sitting, and/or ambulating for the entire shift assigned.
    • Prefer the ability to move laboratory supplies and equipment up to 50 pounds.
