Primary Care Physician
The Trail of the Ancients Byway is located in the Navajo Nation, where the Navajo Area Indian Health Services administers health centers and hospitals, providing health care to approximately 201,516 members of the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation is the largest Native tribe in the United States and has the largest reservation, which encompasses more than 25,516 square miles in northern Arizona, western New Mexico, and southern Utah, with three satellite communities in central New Mexico. The NAIHS is the primary provider of inpatient, ambulatory care, preventive and community health, and environmental health services for members of the Navajo Nation and the San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe.
The Facility - Tohatchi Health Center
The Tohatchi, New Mexico Health Center is located in the Southeastern portion of the Navajo Nation approximately 40 miles North of Gallup, New Mexico. Inpatient needs are met by referral to the Gallup Indian Medical Center. The Tohatchi facility provides 40 hours per week of ambulatory care for approximately 8,000 nearby residents. The facility is closed after 5 p.m. on weekdays and is also closed on weekends. Most staff live in Gallup, New Mexico.
The Tohatchi Health Center is one of the newest facilities operated by the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, having been opened in 1994. The facility is staffed by four physicians and specialty clinics are operated by consultant staff from the Gallup Indian Medical Center. In addition to pediatrics, internal medicine, and family medicine, services provided include pharmacy, physical therapy, x-ray, laboratory, public health nursing, optometry, dental, and health education. Leading reasons for visits include those consistent with eight Navajo Area Client facilities. Seasonal occurrences include episodes of care for Hantavirus, plague, and other conditions endemic to the region.
Job Description
The Primary Care Physician provides consultative and/or direct medical services within their specialized areas to inpatients and/or outpatients at health centers or hospitals. This position reports to the Clinical Director of the facility and includes:
- Serving as a physician by performing diagnosis and treatment of patients commensurate with their specialty training, education, and experience.
- Providing preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
- Examining, qualifying, and assisting patients in maintaining their health.
- Providing direct medical services including diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services within the specialty.
- Ordering diagnostic tests as applicable as well as requesting consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
- Ensuring appropriate medical records are maintained and updated.
- Communicating effectively with patients and families with multiple health problems and of different backgrounds.
Requirements
- Graduated from an accredited medical school (either MD or DO).
- Completion of a residency in Family Medicine.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted license from any of the 50 U.S. States or U.S. Territories.
- Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible (if new grad) by ABFM or AOBFM.
