Polysomnographic Technologist
Join our team in the MSG Sleep department, where you will work daytime hours in a Sleep Medicine Physician Practice.
Job Description
- Perform sleep tests and work with physicians to provide information needed for the diagnosis of sleep disorders.
- Monitor brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, multiple breathing variables, and blood oxygen levels during sleep using specialized recording equipment.
- Interpret recordings as they happen and respond appropriately to emergencies.
- Provide support services related to the treatment of sleep-related problems, including helping patients use devices for the treatment of breathing problems during sleep and assisting individuals in developing good sleep habits.
- Understand how to disassemble and assemble equipment for proper cleaning and disinfect all equipment according to procedure.
- Perform polysomnogram data acquisitions while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments if necessary.
- Follow procedural protocols (such as MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, etc.) to ensure the collection of appropriate data.
- Demonstrate proficiency with scoring sleep studies by applying accepted guidelines to sleep staging and clinical events according to center-specific protocols.
- Document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
- Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments as necessary.
- Comply with the BRPT Standards of Conduct.
- Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs regarding testing procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical directors and laboratory protocols.
- Oversee and perform difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
- Review/revise policy and procedure manuals.
- Act as a preceptor for training technicians.
- Remain current in new advances in sleep medicine including procedures, equipment, and legislation.
- Implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and BI-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.
Requirements
- Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography, or successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience.
- Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent.
