    Physician Assistant (PA)

    USGP has an opportunity for a Physician Assistant (PA) to provide services to our military service members, their families, and veterans within the Neurosurgery Department at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia.

    Job Description

    • Perform patient history and physical examinations, interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, and interpret and correlate subjective and objective findings.
    • Formulate working diagnoses and develop a treatment plan for neurosurgical conditions within the scope of practice of a physician assistant and in conjunction with the neurosurgeon.
    • Implement therapeutic interventions for specific conditions, exercise judgment on conditions requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by a neurosurgeon or other health care professional.
    • Conduct hospital rounds of patients including intensive care units, write orders, progress notes, and perform admission history and physicals within scope of practice parameters of the Neurosurgical physician assistant and under appropriate physician supervision.
    • Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement treatment and therapeutic plans for hospitalized patients, perform or ensure that appropriate discharge planning occurs, dictate discharge summaries for physician signature.
    • In the ambulatory environment, see office patients and complete a thorough history and physical examination that is problem-oriented for neurosurgical conditions. Present the patient to the attending neurosurgeon as needed.
    • Assist the attending neurosurgeon to formulate a treatment plan, order appropriate radiographic studies, and perform office procedures.
    • Evaluate postoperative patients at routine follow-up.
    • Be available to see patients that require a same-day office visit.
    • Return patient phone calls and ensure appropriate follow-through.
    • Review radiographs and laboratory reports for abnormalities to identify test results that require the physician to contact the patient. Report normal results to the patient.
    • Evaluate and screen patients on their overall neurological status.
    • Record all pertinent information about the patient's medical and surgical history, care, and treatment in the patient's medical record according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' requirements for documentation. Documentation must be specific and accurate to allow professional coding to standards established by the American Medical Association coding classification systems.

    Requirements

    • Degree/Education: Possess a Baccalaureate degree from a Physician Assistant Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP).
    • Experience: Possess not less than one (1) year of experience within the last three (3) years as a full-time Physician Assistant.
    • Board Certification: Possess and maintain current certification as a Physician Assistant from the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
    • Licensure/Registration: Possess and maintain a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Physician Assistant in any one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
    • DEA Registration: Required.
