**Respiratory Therapist - Vascular Access Specialist**

The Respiratory Therapist - Vascular Access Specialist (RT-VAS) functions as a specialized Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) providing assessment, treatment, and monitoring of patients with acute illness or cardiopulmonary compromise. This individual provides support for the equipment necessary in the care of these patients and assists physicians and other medical/surgical support staff in conducting activities necessary for interventions, physiological monitoring, and direct patient care. The RT-VAS is dedicated to providing quality service in a timely, courteous, and cost-effective manner.

**Job Description**

- Provide a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care and cardiopulmonary services to patients of all age groups.
- Conduct critical monitoring procedures in addition to routine Respiratory Therapy care.
- Master sterile technique and ultrasound use for IV, arterial line, and CVC insertion.
- Perform Seldinger and Modified Seldinger line insertion techniques, PICC and Midline insertion.
- Insert, monitor, and troubleshoot arterial pressure monitoring lines.
- Set up, monitor, and troubleshoot all pressure transducing lines.
- Participate in Resident training for Central Line insertion and sterile technique.
- Safely and appropriately remove invasive lines and catheters.
- Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret information relative to the patient's age-specific needs.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
- Work with patients in the Emergency Department, PACU, AC, and Critical Care; may function as the shift Lead Therapist.
- Provide airway management for cardiopulmonary emergencies, as well as manual and mechanical ventilatory support using various devices and techniques.
- Administer therapeutic gases, inhaled aerosol medications, and humidity therapy.
- Perform arterial blood gas analysis and maintain the blood gas machine.
- Collaborate with the Vascular Access team for patient assessment and evaluation regarding appropriate line placement for specific IV therapy.

**Requirements**

- Graduate of an AMA approved school of Respiratory Therapy; AAS required. 
- Credentialed through the NBRC as a registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required.
- Current Washington State RCP license.
- BLS required upon hire; ACLS and NRP Certification required within 6 months of hire; VA-BC certification required within three years after completion of orientation; PALS preferred.
- A minimum of three years' experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist preferred; minimum of three years of recent hospital critical care experience preferred.
