    Medical Assistant

    The Medical Assistant is responsible for efficient and courteous registration, transfer, and discharge of patients within established policies and procedures. This role involves thoroughly compiling and typing medical information for patients' records and statistical reports while maintaining current and accurate patient account receivables.

    Job Description

    • Perform a wide variety of patient care activities and accommodative services for the comfort and well-being of patients in accordance with physicians' orders.
    • Perform basic patient care procedures as required.
    • Participate in conferences and serve on committees as requested.
    • Participate in patient and family education as necessary.
    • Prepare for and assist with diagnostic and therapeutic treatments.
    • Take and record vital signs, height, and weight.
    • Perform catheterizations and provide catheter care.
    • Administer oral and intra-muscular medications.
    • Care for patients receiving oxygen therapy.
    • Apply sterile and non-sterile compresses and bandages.
    • Test urine for sugar, acetone, and pH.
    • Assist with physical examinations.
    • Apply ace bandages, hot and/or cold compresses.
    • Collect specimens (blood, urine, stool, and sputum) and may perform vein punctures and EKGs as needed.
    • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and efficiency in the clinic.
    • Be alert to and able to respond appropriately in an emergency situation.
    • Prepare used equipment for re-sterilization.
    • Know legal requirements for reporting to police, health department, and other agencies, and follow those requirements.
    • Accompany or transfer patients to other departments such as lab or x-ray.
    • Clean and stock examination rooms.
    • Manage time in order to expedite patient flow.
    • Assist with minor outpatient surgery.
    • Greet patients courteously, determine their needs, and offer assistance.
    • Register patients by performing necessary procedures, such as preparation of records, reports, notices, service charge slips, and payer information.
    • Interview patients, relatives, or others responsible to determine payment arrangements and refer unusual cases to immediate supervisor.
    • Assist self-pay patients in making suitable arrangements for balances due beyond initial deposits or third-party payments.
    • Answer inquiries regarding patient accounts and advise patients on insurance benefits.
    • Receive all payments and deposits, issue receipts for all monies received, and make proper accounting for all funds received.
    • Post charges daily to the proper patient account.
    • Post payments to accounts daily.
    • Determine billing method for third-party payer.
    • Contact insurance carriers/agencies to obtain pre-certification of ancillary, admission, and surgical procedures.
    • Operate various office equipment including copiers, fax machines, and other equipment as assigned.
    • Operate communication systems, placing and answering telephone calls, paging or contacting staff.
    • Make and maintain appointment schedules for clinic physicians.
    • Secure required signatures on reports and records relative to the release of information according to policies and procedures.
    • Contact patients, physicians, or others for information necessary to properly complete insurance or other type billings.
    • Type memos, correspondence, etc., as needed.
    • Compile periodic and statistical reports and other data as directed.

    Requirements

    • High School Diploma and Graduate of Medical Assistant Training Program.
    • Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute accurately.
    • Three (3) to six (6) months on-the-job training as required to attain proficiency in assigned duties and responsibilities.
    • BLS Certification (Required).
    • Certified Medical Assistant (Required).
