    Job Description

    • Weekday Coverage:

      • Day Shift 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
      • Evening Shift 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
      • Call Shift 11:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., pager call from home 8 p.m. - 7 a.m.
    • Weekend Coverage:

      • 7:00 a.m. Saturday to 7:00 a.m. Monday (On Call)
    • CRNA(s) must be available within 30 minutes from receiving notification.

    • On-call is on an as-needed basis.

    • Responsibilities:

      • Provide the most effective delivery of anesthetic care throughout the hospital while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.
      • Responsible for providing a complete range of anesthetic care to patients including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post-anesthesia care in compliance with the national Joint Commission accreditation standards.
      • Provide anesthesia-related care in all functional areas of the OR, PACU, ICU ward, and clinic settings as needed.
      • Examine patients, obtain medical history, and use diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures.
      • Coordinate and direct work during medical procedures with anesthesiologists.
      • Administer anesthetic during medical procedures using local, intravenous, spinal, or caudal methods.
      • Coordinate the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures in operating rooms.
      • Provide and maintain life support and airway management as needed and help prepare patients for emergency surgery.
      • Decide when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or ward or to be sent home following surgery.

    Administrative Responsibilities

    • Estimated 10% of time not involved in direct patient care.

    Quality Improvement Meetings

    • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings with committee participation as required by the VA facility Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee.

    Staff Meetings

    • Attend staff meetings as required by the VA facility Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee. Communicate with COR on this requirement and report any conflicts that may interfere with compliance.

    Patient Safety Compliance and Reporting

    • Follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care.
    • Make every effort to prevent medication errors, falls, and patient injury caused by acts of commission or omission in the delivery of care.
    • Document all events related to patient injury, medication errors, and other breaches of patient safety in the medical record of those impacted and disclose to the patient or surrogate as soon as practicable (but within 24 hours).

    Qualifications

    • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program, masters prepared, approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
    • Current National Board Certification as a Nurse Anesthetist (NBCRNA).
    • Active and unrestricted nursing/CRNA license to practice in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia when services are performed onsite on VA property.
    • All licenses held by key personnel working on this BPA shall be full and unrestricted licenses. CRNA(s) who have current, full and unrestricted licenses in one or more states but who have ever had a license restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily revoked, voluntarily surrendered pending action or denied upon application will not be considered for the purposes of this BPA.
    • BLS and ACLS certifications.
