    General Job Responsibilities

    • Perform gross and microscopic examinations of tissue samples, blood, and other bodily fluids to diagnose diseases and conditions.
    • Provide accurate and timely diagnostic information to physicians to aid in patient care decisions.
    • Conduct autopsies to determine cause of death when required.
    • Interpret and communicate pathology results to other healthcare providers.
    • Maintain high standards of quality control and compliance with laboratory regulations and protocols.
    • Participate in case reviews to discuss complex cases.
    • Maintain accurate and thorough medical records.

    Skills

    • Extensive knowledge of pathology principles, techniques, and laboratory practices.
    • Strong analytical and diagnostic abilities to interpret complex laboratory results.
    • High attention to detail and precision in performing and reviewing tests.
    • Competency with laboratory software and electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
    • Strong communication skills to explain complex medical findings.
    • Flexibility to adapt to new work environments and different medical teams.

    Minimum Education Requirements

    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
    • Residency training program in pathology by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

    License & Certifications

    • Board certification in pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABP) or the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology (AOBP).
    • Active and unrestricted medical license in Michigan.
    • Additional certifications in subspecialties such as cytopathology, hematopathology, or forensic pathology may be required or preferred.

    Experience

    • While specific requirements may vary, most locum pathologist positions prefer candidates with at least one year of experience providing care in a clinical setting.
