    Join our team at Kent Campus Hospital as a Histotechnologist. This position involves preparing slides for histologic and cytologic diagnosis utilizing various techniques in a supportive environment.

    Job Description

    • Prepare slides for histologic and cytologic diagnosis utilizing paraffin, frozen section, microtomy, cytospin, and other appropriate techniques.
    • Prepare and perform routine and special stains and histochemical procedures.
    • Perform data entry and maintain records such as accession logs, workload, and quality control.
    • Maintain slide and block files, match slides and reports, and troubleshoot and resolve inquiries and problems.
    • Assist the Pathologist with autopsies and perform gross descriptions on specific surgical specimens as needed.
    • Perform all histology procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform and document all tasks and procedures in compliance with all personal and section accreditation standards from JC and state/federal licensure while maintaining accuracy in all job functions. Identify, investigate, determine, and implement necessary corrective action, and communicate appropriately all unusual/unexpected results or situations. Consult appropriate personnel regarding all difficulties, technical questions, or unresolved problems.
    • Perform all tasks, procedures, and documentation within laboratory standards for timeliness without reminder. Follow through on all tests, procedures, assignments, or tasks left from the previous shift, and report any incomplete assignments to ensure work is completed without interruption of service.
    • Demonstrate financial responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage. Replace all supplies used during the shift to assure volumes are sufficient for the following shift. Recognize low inventory situations and alert appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Inventory and/or order section supplies to ensure adequate stock is available as assigned by/or in the absence of the supervisor.
    • Assist coworkers at all times with any difficult procedures/problems, including heavy workload. Provide instruction on new methods and instrumentation. Train new employees and students. Document all instruction completed on assigned employees' training outlines accurately and completely before the end of the shift.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.

    Requirements

    • Education: Certificate Program in Histotechnology; At least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), AND one year full-time acceptable experience in a histopathology (clinical, veterinary, industry or research) laboratory in the U.S., Canada or an accredited laboratory within the last ten years. "On the Job" training for incumbents in position prior to 2005 is also acceptable.

    • Experience: None required beyond what is specified in the Education Route. Preferred: 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory.

    • Education: Bachelor Degree in Biology.

    • Credential(s): Certified Histotechnician, Certified Histotechnologist.

    Salary Range

    $29.60 - $47.47 hourly
