Job Description
- The primary function of the surgical technologist is the "scrub technologist" in the surgical suite.
- Responsible for the provision of patient care to meet identified patient outcomes and achieve the goals of the facility as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Knows and follows aseptic technique when performing scrub duties and support duties for the department.
- Performs scrub duties as assigned in service areas.
- Assists in carrying out the patient's plan of care by performing assigned tasks within the scope of practice of surgical technologists and according to unit guidelines, facility policies, and legal limitations.
- Functions as a surgical scrub technician in the operating room/procedure room under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
- Assists with gowning and gloving other members of the surgical team.
- Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures, including skin preparations and draping of patients.
- Participates in the final "Time Out" process in the OR or procedure room to verify the correct patient, procedure, and site.
- Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns them to the proper area for storage or processing.
- Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle count with the circulation nurse.
- Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors.
- Assists with stocking, replenishing, and preparation of supplies.
- Helps ensure that specialty carts, equipment, and supplies are cleaned monthly and checked for outdates as needed.
- Terminally cleans OR at the end of the day.
- Transports and escorts patients to various areas of the hospital and for discharge.
- Assists with maintenance, selection, and preparation of instruments, equipment, and supplies necessary to maintain a state of readiness for operative cases.
- Fosters guest relations within the team and with patients and families.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient information as required by facility policy.
- Supports patients in practicing their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the plan of care.
- Adjusts patient care based on age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients.
- Assists with completing charges for patient services and participates in cost containment.
- Participates in educational and performance improvement activities; maintains educational requirements to keep certification status for Certified Surgical Techs.
- Follows established facility policies regarding attendance.
- Demonstrates competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities.
- Actively participates in cost containment and assists in accurate documentation of implants.
- Interacts with all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional facility environment.
Requirements
- Requires high school graduate or equivalent; prefer completion of Surgical Technologist Course from an Accredited CAHEA Program. Experience in lieu of formal training will be considered.
- Prefer one-year experience as a surgical technologist.
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
Benefits
- $15,000 sign-on bonus
- Pay range: $22.75 - $40.00 per hour
- 12-hour shift, 8-hour shift, weekends as needed
