Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Description:

• Performs clinical testing in assigned sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology.
• Ensures accurate and timely results, including quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance of equipment.
• Recognizes abnormal critical values and notifies medical team members of results.
• Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily operations in the laboratory.
• Provides and dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.

Responsibilities:

• Ensures that the company philosophy and core values are evident in the service delivered to customers.
• Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing: Obtains blood specimens via venipuncture and/or fingerstick; labels appropriately; processes and tests specimens.
• Result Reporting: Recognizes errors or improbable results and takes appropriate action; reports critical values per policy.
• Performs tests within established timeframes across various laboratory sections.
• Performs, analyzes, and records quality control following guidelines.
• Conducts preventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoots minor problems.
• Takes responsibility for professional growth and continued education.
• Assists in training new associates and students in laboratory practices.
• Follows established protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and use of hazardous materials.
• Utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems for laboratory results.
• Completes annual competency assessment successfully.

Requirements:

• Education/Skills:

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience.
  • Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course or equivalent education as per CLIA regulations.

• Experience:

  • No experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.
  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including clinical rotation through laboratory sections.

• Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

  • Louisiana requires State Licensure.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within 1 year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
