Community Overview
Monterey County is home to the stunning Big Sur coastline, the charming city of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Cannery Row. Enjoy golfing at Pebble Beach, dining at local restaurants in the Salinas Valley, and wine tasting in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Salinas, California, is known as the "Salad Bowl of the World" due to its extensive farming industry producing lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, broccoli, grapes for wine, and flowers.
The city has a rich cultural history as the birthplace of John Steinbeck, author of "The Grapes of Wrath." Salinas features one of the largest collections of art deco and Depression Modern buildings in the state, alongside many original Victorian homes. The heart of Salinas is Oldtown, or Main Street, where families, students, and couples gather to shop, dine, stroll through farmers markets, and enjoy movies or concerts at locally owned businesses. The area is less than 15 miles from the coast.
