    Community Overview

The Mescalero people were nomadic hunters and gatherers who roamed the Southwest. They were experts in guerrilla warfare and highly skilled horsemen. The women were known for their ability to find and prepare food from many different plant sources. The name "Mescalero" comes from their gathering and consumption of the mescal plant, which was a staple of their diets. Today, three sub-tribes—Mescalero, Lipan, and Chiricahua—make up the Mescalero Apache Tribe. They live on a reservation of 463,000 acres that was once the heartland of their aboriginal homelands.

The Mescalero Indian Hospital provides both inpatient and outpatient services, supplemented by various field health programs. The hospital has an active outpatient department with several specialty clinics, including diabetic, well baby, and prenatal care. Support services are provided by on-site laboratory and radiology departments. The Field Health Program supports health and safety standards within the community through field visits, surveys, clinics, environmental health services, and sanitary facilities construction projects.
