Orthopedic Physician Assistant
The Orthopedic Physician Assistant will perform various functions during the course of any given day. This includes examining patients, performing comprehensive physical examinations, compiling patient medical data, ordering diagnostic tests such as x-rays and laboratory tests, and interpreting MRI/diagnostic testing. The role also involves performing therapeutic procedures such as injections, casting, suturing, wound care, and managing infections. Progress notes are recorded, and continuity of care is provided.
All PAs are responsible for ensuring that specific duties and expectations are met daily. Time off must be approved by the supervising physician, and PAs are expected to work a five-day schedule with time off provided for covering weekend calls. Patient discharge notes must be dictated within 24 hours of discharge, and all consults must be signed off within 48 hours of service.
Job Description
- Respond to physician requests in the Emergency Room
- Attend to patients in the ER and provide care under physician direction
- First assist in the operating room at the hospital and surgical center
- Ensure the operating room is set up for surgery
- Be present for the beginning of surgical cases and assist as needed
- Follow up with postoperative patients within 24 hours
- Make hospital rounds on weekends under physician direction
- Handle hospital floor, orthopedic floor phone calls, and outpatient calls on weekends and at night
- Conduct office hours with the physician and independently
- Interview patients, order x-rays, provide education, administer injections, and apply/remove casts and bracing
Requirements
- Orthopedic experience required
- Successful graduation from an accredited PA college or university program resulting in a PA certificate
- Must have a Connecticut state PA license in good standing; conditional employment may be granted to recent graduates
Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents
- Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers and regulatory agencies
- Ability to write articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
- Ability to effectively present information to management and public groups
- Proficiency in mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and geometry
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
