    Surgical Technologist

    Job Description:

    • No nights, weekends, or holidays
    • Participate as a member of the OR team in planning, preparing, and producing a safe and effective OR experience for patients undergoing surgery

    Qualifications and Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required
    • Certification as a Surgical Technologist required
    • BLS certification required or the ability to obtain within one year
    • Previous work experience in an Ambulatory Surgical facility or acute care setting:
      • Surgical Tech I: prior experience as a surgical tech strongly preferred
      • Surgical Tech II: at least three years of experience as a surgical tech required
    • Must have proficient computer skills
    • Knowledge of medical terminology required

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Prepare and check assigned cases for appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for each procedure
    • Follow aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies, setting up cases, scrubbing, gowning, and draping
    • Maintain an orderly back table and mayo stand during procedure following established routine set-up
    • Assist circulating nurse in performing sponge, needle, and instrument counts; immediately report discrepancies
    • Proper handling of instruments and equipment to avoid damage and loss
    • Keep surgeon preference cards up-to-date
    • Perform scrub duties as outlined in the procedure manual
    • Assist with application of dressings and transfers of patients
    • Assist with general cleaning of the room and set up the next case
    • Adapt to changes in the workload and work as part of the team
    • Assist other staff members with the completion of routine duties of the department
    • Assist with the orientation of new personnel
    • Maintain confidentiality of all patient, Center, and physician information
    • Perform duties in a safe manner
    • Demonstrate an awareness of patient safety and proper body mechanics when moving patients or equipment
    • Check assigned OR equipment before the case to ensure proper functioning
    • Adhere to department-specific OSHA and infection control guidelines

    Professional Development:

    • May train newly hired staff as needed
    • May take on extra responsibilities such as special projects, research, etc.
    • Function in the role of float or cover charge role as needed to assist in managing the patient and staff schedule

    Language Skills:

    • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, peers, physicians, and the public
    • Ability to speak and understand English fluently

    Physical Demands:

    • Moderate physical effort working in an indoor environment
    • Moderate sitting and keyboarding
    • Efforts consisting of standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and stooping
    • Frequently lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds with occasional lifting and moving of a maximum of 50 pounds
    • Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency

    Work Environment:

    • Exposed to bloodborne pathogens, anesthetic gases, sterilizers, electrical and mechanical hazards, confused or combative patients, bio-contaminated waste, and unpleasant elements
    • Subject to stressful situations; occasional long or irregular hours
