Surgical Technologist
Job Description:
- Under the direction and supervision of qualified professional registered nurses, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for the set-up and maintenance of the surgical field and assists the surgeon during operative procedures.
- Possesses the ability to scrub all cases in all services and demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation, their uses, and accurate methods of sterilization.
- Maintains an aseptic controlled environment.
- Assists in processes to streamline care, reduce inefficiency, improve quality, and reduce costs.
- Supports the philosophy and goals of OSS Orthopaedic Hospital.

Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist required.
- BLS certification required or an ability to obtain within one year.
- Previous work experience in a PeriOperative area as a surgical technologist.
- Surgical Tech I: Prior experience as a surgical tech strongly preferred.
- Surgical Tech II: At least three years of experience as a surgical tech required.
- Ability to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
- Must be able to plan and organize work.
- Must have proficient computer skills.
- Must have professional and effective communication skills and be able to promote effective communication at all levels.
- Knowledge of medical terminology required.
Responsibilities:
- Assists with preparation and cleaning of the surgical suite as directed by the circulating nurse.
- Sets up and maintains the sterile surgical field.
- Assists the surgeon by passing instruments during operations.
- Performs sponge, needle, and instrument count.
- Anticipates the needs of the operative team and delivers necessary instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently.
- Demonstrates knowledge of accurate methods of sterilization and maintains an aseptic controlled environment.
- Transports patients and assists with transferring patients from stretcher to table and vice versa.
- Assists with lifting and positioning patients.
- Reports unusual occurrences to the manager or designee.
- Contributes to the efficient and productive operation of the Operating Room.
- Level II: May assist with training and/or mentoring newly hired staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- Moderate physical effort when working in patient care environment consisting of standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, and stooping.
- Moderate sitting and keyboarding when performing administrative responsibilities.
- Fine and gross motor skills and manual dexterity to operate keyboard and other equipment.
- Occasionally lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to an emergency.
Work Environment:
- Climate-controlled environment.
- Exposed to blood borne pathogens, odorous chemicals and specimens, toxic chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards, confused or combative patients, bio-contaminated waste, and unpleasant elements.
- Subject to stressful situations, long or irregular hours.
