Surgical Assistant

Location: Fremont, Ohio

Job Description:

• Assist and provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
• Perform preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.
• Perform functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate proficiency in proper scrub technique and the handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment for assigned cases following department policies and procedures.
• Utilize preference lists, knowledge of anatomy and physiology, departmental policies, and procedures in preparing for and carrying out case responsibilities.
• Maintain the integrity of the sterile field by utilizing aseptic techniques and observing the surgical team.
• Participate in the preceptorship of staff to the first assisting role and act as a role model and resource person for staff and students.
• Assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation and function only under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
• Perform assisting duties including handling tissue, providing exposure using instruments, suturing, providing hemostasis, closing tissue and skin.

Requirements:

• Must be a high school graduate or equivalent and a graduate of an accredited Certified Surgical Technologist program.
• Must have at least three (3) years' experience in the operating room and have passed the certification exam.
• Must maintain current certification through acquisition of mandatory contact hours of continuing education as approved by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).
• Successful completion of a course in preparing the Surgical Technologist as a First Assistant in surgery, meeting recommended education standards established by the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN).

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to move about and between workstations.
• Must be able to understand directions, communicate, and respond to inquiries.
• Must be able to input and retrieve information from a computer.
• Must be able to lift medium materials, with continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching; frequent pushing, pulling, and squatting. Occasional sitting, stairs, and kneeling.
