Job Description
- Perform diagnostic procedures using ultrasound equipment to produce images of tissues.
- Review and record pertinent history and clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results.
- Position patients and instruct them regarding procedures to obtain desired diagnostic results.
- Conduct scanning procedures using ultrasound equipment, adjusting as necessary to record anatomical data.
- Assist physicians in procedures such as localizations, biopsies, and aspirations by confirming locations using ultrasound.
- Assemble necessary information and film for physician interpretation.
- Review orders for appropriateness and contact referring doctors with questions.
- Schedule examinations and notify transport services for patient transport.
- Order, pick up, and store supplies required for ultrasound procedures.
- Maintain ultrasound equipment and work area, submitting maintenance requests as necessary.
- Ensure optimal infection control by cleaning scanning rooms daily and between patients.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and comfort of patients in care.
- Participate in the daily operations of the sonographic department, including maintaining accreditation.
- Establish ethical working relationships with hospitals, referral agencies, and commercial agencies.
- Provide clinical experience for diagnostic medical sonography students and on-the-job instruction to employees.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- One year of formal training in an accredited School of Ultrasound or four years of experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer.
- Current CPR certification from AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers.
- Ability to operate ultrasound equipment and assist patients into correct positions.
- Analytical skills to determine the best methods for obtaining desired results.
- Interpersonal skills to effectively deal with patients under physical or emotional stress, as well as staff members and physicians.
- ARDMS certification is required.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
Experience
- Twelve months of training in ultrasonography through an accredited ultrasound program or eligibility to sit for the board examination set forth by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Generally good working conditions with some exposure to radiation; established safety precautions minimize injury risk.
- Frequent standing, lifting, and positioning of patients is required.
- Some visual strain may occur due to working in dimly lit rooms and observing screens.
