Job Description:
- Progress and administer physical therapy treatment for patients with injuries, muscle, nerve, joint, and bone diseases to restore function, relieve pain, and prevent disability.
- Set up monitors for treatment including heat, ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, etc., as specified by the physical therapist.
- Observe patients prior to treatment and monitor patient status and reaction to treatment, reporting to therapist as necessary.
- Assist the physical therapist with monitoring exercise programs (isokinetic, free weights, pulleys, and mat exercises) and report patient reactions to exercises.
- Administer massage, manual therapy, and exercises to improve and maintain functions.
- Instruct, motivate, and assist patients to perform various physical activities and use supportive devices like crutches, canes, and braces.
- Record treatment responses, subjective remarks, and progress in patients' charts using appropriate S.O.A.P. format.
- Instruct patients and families in treatment procedures to be continued at home and review competencies.
- Communicate with physicians and their staff to obtain additional patient information and suggest revisions in treatment as necessary.
- Monitor responses such as appearance, color, temperature, respiratory rate, and palpate pulse, and take action if the patient is in distress.
- Tour students, observers, and volunteers through the department, explaining routines and equipment within areas of expertise.
- Notify the designee of the need to order supplies or special purchase items.
- Direct and assist outpatients through the treatment area, assisting with undressing or dressing activities.
- Actively participate in the quality improvement process and suggest improvements.
- Promote a friendly atmosphere that fosters effective patient care and professionalism.
- Utilize effective communication skills with physicians, patients, families, insurance carriers, case workers, and co-workers.
Requirements:
- Associate degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program.
- Current physical therapy assistant licensure to practice in Florida.
- Current physical and mental abilities to perform physical labor, including up to 8 hours of ambulation and assisting patients from wheelchairs.
- Ability to read and write fluently in English.
- Must be Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified.
- Hospital Experience Preferred.
