Department Summary
The Medical Surgical Unit, also known as VBCH MSU, is located on the second floor at Vanderbilt Bedford County Hospital (VBCH). There are 29 beds on the unit and the typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4 without assistance from a Patient Care Technician or 1:6 with assistance from a Patient Care Technician.
The environment on our unit is fast-paced, organized, and prepared to provide excellent patient care. We care for adult patients 18 and above who are being treated for COPD, CHF, acute respiratory failure, pneumonia, COVID, cellulitis, orthopedic surgeries, GI complications, and much more.
Our patients are unique because they consist of a wide variety of reasons for hospitalization which allows our nurses and patient care techs (PCTs) to utilize their critical thinking and hands-on skills to provide the best care for our patients.
One of the perks of working on our unit is the tight-knit family we have. Everyone does an excellent job at working together and lending a helping hand when needed.
Our nurses are successful because they have a passion for patient advocacy and care, the resources to complete their daily duties, and support from fellow nurses, PCTs, and leaders.
We orient new nurses to our unit by providing individualized 1:1 training for six to eight weeks. During this time, the new orient follows the same or a few seasoned nurses to learn the ins and outs of their job expectations.
We encourage professional growth.
If your career goal is to provide quality patient care and excel in your nursing career, the Medical Surgical Unit at Vanderbilt Bedford County Hospital can help with this by making you a part of our excellent team of nurses. We are always interested in expanding our team of RNs and LPNs.
