Emergency Department Coordinator
Performs a variety of functions related to the coordination of care to emergency department patients. Acts as receptionist for patients and visitors and serves as the central contact person for telephone calls and distribution point for communication. Registers all Emergency Department patients and performs a variety of functions that impact the Emergency Department coding and billing process.
Job Description
- Conduct patient interviews to collect accurate financial, biographic, and demographic information for emergency department admissions and/or registrations.
- Record insurance co-payments and implement and obtain signatures on financial waivers and treatment consent and authorization documentation.
- Scan insurance cards into patients' medical records.
- Collect patient insurance co-payments and/or liabilities at the time of service.
- Greet, direct, and assist patients, visitors, physicians, and ancillary department staff.
- Answer telephones using personable etiquette, providing accurate information or forwarding callers to the appropriate resource.
- Identify emergency messages, direct information to the appropriate personnel, and maintain confidentiality.
- Enter and/or retrieve data from established computer files using knowledge of various computer applications designed for functions such as patient management, patient census, registration, billing, bed tracking, etc.
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource for multiple applications such as EPIC, Promise, etc., keeping current with system/application upgrades and changes.
- Perform a variety of duties related to the creation and maintenance of the patient medical record in a manner that expedites registration, admission, discharge, transfer, etc.
- Communicate delays/difficulties in providing services or alteration of routine.
- Acknowledge and respond to patient alarms and notify the appropriate care provider.
- Consult with appropriate clinical and non-clinical staff to resolve issues and concerns from patient medical records, ancillary department results, and patient family inquiries.
- Order and stock supplies for the department as needed on an ongoing basis.
- Monitor security cameras and facilitate the flow of patients and visitors through the department via doorbells into the Emergency Department.
- Assist with care and maintenance of department equipment, hardware, and supplies.
- Serve as the department's Shift Communicator and display proven, consistent performance in the role, if applicable.
- Participate in department projects as assigned; make proactive recommendations in updating department resources and reference materials.
- Actively support process flow improvement and provide constructive feedback to leadership.
- Appropriately handle/assist in facilitating downtime situations and follow instructed guidelines.
- Train new staff and provide ongoing support and instruction when staff become independent in their role.
- Resolve patient complaints in the absence of a supervisor/team leader.
- Serve as a resource and example to Level I staff by assisting with questions regarding registration, workflow, operations of the department, and other miscellaneous inquiries.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 1 year experience in Emergency Registration required.
- Completion of EPIC Registration Class upon hire required.
- 3-4 weeks hands-on training in the department upon hire required.
- CRS & SRS Training (within 6 months of obtaining Level II status) within 180 days required.
- Medical Terminology within 180 days required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Trained as a Shift Communicator (for a minimum of 6 months), if applicable.
- Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
- Excellent computer skills and the ability to use various software applications at once.
- Completion of Access Operations Level II Application.
- Annual Hospital Account Verification of 90% or greater.
