Job Description
This is a full-time position: Monday - Friday, 3pm - 11:30pm with weekends as needed.
- The Histology Technician I performs the routine tasks associated with making stained slides from surgically excised tissue for the purpose of diagnosis by a pathologist.
- Embedding, cutting, staining, and performing other tasks required to process tissue in the Histology lab. Frozen Sectioning is not required for all histotechnicians.
- Performs necessary tests for each sample following standard operating procedures for all testing.
- Prepares solutions and reagents for special stain procedures and obtains and validates tissue used in special stains.
- Performs all special stain procedures.
- Performs filing of finished blocks and slides.
- Operates all instruments/equipment according to accepted written procedures.
- Registers and processes cases in the LIS; prints worksheets and labels.
- Meets acceptable turnaround time and productivity standards for the Section.
- Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies or problems and notifies appropriate personnel; assists in problem resolution.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the LIS and its application to all aspects of job-related functions.
- Recognizes and resolves computer problems. Recognizes and resolves other problems or inconsistencies.
- Ensures that records are accurate, complete, legible, and appropriately filed and stored.
- Operates all instruments/equipment according to accepted written Standard Operating Procedures.
- Recognizes and identifies instrument/equipment problems and helps in resolution of instrument/equipment problems or contacts appropriate technical service.
- Performs and documents all routine and non-routine maintenance according to Standard Operating Procedures.
- Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly workplace including instrument and general laboratory equipment.
- Performs and documents Quality Control daily according to established laboratory protocol.
- Performs proficiency testing, as requested.
- Ensures all corporate safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards are met.
- Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.
- Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies. Verifies receipt, labels records, and stores supplies received.
- Has knowledge of other Summit Medical Group EMR computer systems in order to obtain clinical information (e.g., Athena, EPIC).
- Prepares reagents as needed.
- Assists with training new employees.
Requirements
- High School/GED/Equivalent with 3 years work experience is required. Vocational/Technical School/Diploma Program in Histotechnology is preferred.
- AA or AS degree or equivalent training and experience is preferred.
- 1-7 years' experience as a Histotechnician is preferred.
- HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) preferred.
- Experience cutting Frozen Sections is preferred but not required.
Physical Job Requirements
Physical job requirements include physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job, taking distance and speed into account. Endurance is expected with prolonged standing/bending, and possibly walking. Physical strength to lift at least 25lbs for supplies. Concentration/intensity includes prolonged mental effort with limited opportunity for breaks. The position requires multi-tasking, organizing, and priority setting.
Environmental Risks
Exposure to infectious biohazards, blood, body fluids. Exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes. Sharps and latex hazards.
Travel
May be required to travel to off-site locations if scheduled to assist with a Frozen Section case.
